elle whenever my boss says "think of the big picture, elle" l'm immediately an astronaut floating silently in space tethered to my ship looking down on earth, and nothing he wants seems important or even relevant really so this strategy has backfired on him more than once is what I'm

I love the sentiment, but also, then choosing famously the first untethered spacewalk for the photo. Why even put tethered in there.

Has anyone got something more productive for me to overthink please

Why don't you think about the big picture instead?

Tethered but with a picture of untethered

Untethered... and accelerating

Also, I can't think of a situation I'd be less stressed in than floating untethered in space.

Fuck that. So many criticality-one potential failures that will kill you.

Please just tether me daddy.

This was my first reaction as well.

And the Pale Blue dot by Carl Sagan/Voyager 1. That should also burst your boss' delusional bubble.

I usually think about how the sun will swallow the earth, having destroyed life as we know it long before that moment. Which is fortunate, because otherwise in the end we'd have to deal with an universe devoid of all light and warmth, as white dwarfs slowly dim, black holes fade away into nothingness and perhaps even protons decay.

In the big picture everything we do is ultimately utterly meaningless.

The important part is taking that as a free pass to finding your own meaning in life

There's actually some new models that show it's possible the sun won't completely engulf earth and it will still exist afterwards. Obviously everything will be dead from the heat but it still gives the rock a chance to get life again!
