@asklemmy How do you listen to music / podcasts? At what places?

For me, I mostly listen on podcasts during my drive or commuting on the train, via bluebooth earphones even in my car.

When doing deep work such as #programming on the computer, I listened to music out loud (bluetooth speaker) in my home office.

So you're posting to lemmy form mastodon ... that's awesome! (genuinely).

There are a few little formatting things you can do to make it work slightly better however ...

You can see what your post looks like here: lemmy.ml/post/2253666

  1. Treat the first line of the post as the heading (as that's what lemmy does).
  2. So keep it clean and avoid putting ats or hashtags in the first line as they'll create links that make it look messy
  3. Otherwise, make sure to keep the lemmy community as the first at-tag in the post (eg @ asklemmy @ lemmy.ml). Lemmy will only use the first one.
  4. Besides that, you can at-tag anyone else you like and use hashtags, just as you have here, as much as you like.

If it's at all helpful, here's a quick demo of posting to lemmy from mastodon, with more posts in the thread to illustrate how it can all work together: https://hachyderm.io/users/maegul/statuses/110483509521476095

I had no clue until I clicked a hashtag

For podcasts I use AntennaPod and quite like it. There are some issues with the auto fetching of new episodes though and I need to refresh it manually.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Also using Antennapod. It's a fantastic piece of Foss. It does have its problems but it's still great.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

AntennaPod is amazing and open source. While I have no problem with manual refreshing it bothers me that the only way to add podcasts is to switch to the dedicated panel via menu otherwise great app

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

This, also their Android auto interface is atrocious.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Yeah, trying to select something else from the queue doesn't work

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I have a 70 gig iTunes library and still use clickwheel iPods. Primarily in my car

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

70 GB? Those are rookie numbers.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

I know. It’s about 8000 songs. I work off of a 900 song playlist in my car.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

I use AntennaPod for podcast

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

I hear Podcast mainly at work. I have a no brain, just work job, so i can hear about 3 Podcast on one Shift. I loved Antennapod, but 2 of my favorite Podcasts are Spotify Exclusives, so i switched to Spotify, wich i only use for Podcast. My Music Streaming App is YouTube Music, because i am YouTube Premium User. I simply hate Adds!

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

While working, eating and, running. I'm using Musicolet to listen to music because it allows to swith between song queues without losing the position of the last tracks

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

@small44 while eating I watch YouTube or browse Lemmy

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

I use PodcastAddict on my phone. Anywhere. In bed, walking, on the train...

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

so cool to see a mstdn post on Lemmy

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I listen to music while working (home office) or when doing anything around the house.

I have a bigger sound set on my desk and two differently sized Bluetooth speakers for carrying around.

My primary source for music is actually twitch.tv. Many really good DJs there with live performance.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Second using twitch for music! I bounce around between djs or that lofi channel with the girl playing games in space

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I listen to podcasts when I go to work or walk my dog. I use Overcast as an app, and I think it's great.

I work with music for a living, and I have to say that I do not listen to a lot of music, especially because I need an optimal listening setup to fully appreciate it. Currently, I use Spotify, but I think I will cancel my annual subscription when it expires.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

@bebboIsTalking Wonder why you planning to cancel Spotify, what will you replace it with?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I no longer like that kind of music consumption model. I've noticed that I prefer to listen to the same album multiple times, and I think the "all-you-can-eat" model is detrimental to the artists. I prefer to support the artists directly, if possible, through services like Bandcamp. If I urgently need to listen to a specific song, I can use YouTube or tolerate the advertisements.

@techconsulnerd @asklemmy first time im seeing someone post on Lemmy from mastodon. Wonder if they can see my comment??

To answer your question: Spotify and wherever I feel like it. Mostly on my commute though

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

@lom @asklemmy Yes Lemmy users can see your toot from Mastodon. You can see it here https://lemmy.ml/comment/1778144

Mostly at home, during work. Sometimes when walking to the store. I play it from my Jellyfin server (though only streaming when I access it via Android or the TV, from my computer I directly access the SMB share), the music itself is 90% from Bandcamp. I have a simple but decent Logitech 5.1 system.

When we sit on the balcony, then my wife usually streams from Spotify or Deezer or whatever streaming service she uses ;) She also uses those for podcasts, something I have no interest in at all.

  • Music: Spotify
  • Podcasts: Pocket Casts

Podcasts in the car to and from work, and while at work (WordPress Developer) with wireless earbuds. I listen to music when I've gotten through my feed of podcasts or when reading a book. Lofi and classical are both great for listening while reading, but while coding I prefer high energy music like math rock or metalcore/mathcore.

Some of my top recommended podcasts:

  • The Last Podcast on the Left
  • My Favorite Murder
  • Dungeons & Daddies
  • Buried Bones
  • Hardcore History
  • My Brother My Brother and Me
  • Oh No Ross & Carrie
  • Ologies
  • Sawbones
  • Search Engine
  • Spooked
  • The Wild
[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

I used to listen while commuting, but since now I work from home, I tend to listen while doing the dishes.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

PocketCasts but lately more AntennaPod for Podcasts

Plex(amp) and Spotify for music

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

i listen to music on my drives to anywhere, and most of the day at work. i sometimes listen to podcasts near the end of my work day

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Podcasts while working at construction using earbuds and podcast republic app

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

@techconsulnerd @asklemmy headphones on, anytime, anywhere.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Mainly when I'm running as it keeps me more mindful of my pace/effort and while commuting to dull the pain.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Music at home and sometimes at the office. Podcasts while commuting.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Music 8 hrs straight at work.

Audiobooks for about a half hour before bed

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Music: I have a few CDs that are in need of a CD player and also have Jellyfin (no server, only local) to listen to my downloaded music on my TV (which mostly comes from Bandcamp). For my phone, I have the Bandcamp app, it's basic but it does what I need from it.

Podcasts: via Podcast Addict on my phone (unfortunately no browser version, but that's gotten less important with the years as I spend less time on my computer and the time I do spend requires enough focus that I don't listen to podcasts), during sports sessions (podcast for warmup & cooldown, audiobook for the session itself), commutes, walking, cleaning & cooking.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

@alex first time I see someone still listening to CD audio for at least the past 10 years

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I still l listen to CDs in the car

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I use Spotify and my Navidrome/Substreamer setup for music. Apple Podcasts for podcasts. I tried Spotify for simplicity but the amount of ads offended me, especially given I have Premium.

Mainly work and driving for music, work for podcasts. Sometimes music at home but rarely for any extended period and if I do, it’s usually a record.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I sometimes get to listen at work. I use AntennaPod but it's queue system is garbage. I only use it for it's RSS and local folder options (music folder in my podcast player).

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I work remotely, so listening mainly from my monitor's speakers during work. After work, I recently bought a really small DAP made by shanling, and as an output I use a JBL small bluetooth speaker or oneplus buds Z2 (I bought them on sale and it was a great purchase). My music collection is a bit large (~2TB) so on my DAP I have ~100gb and it is more than enough. If I need something from my collection, I just transfer it from my pc.

I don't really like podcasts, but I use the same DAP for audiobooks sometimes.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

i use spotify, on my browser while i'm in the office and using spicetify while i'm home. on my phone i'll use xmanager. i'll use headphones if i'm in the office but my monitor's or phone's speakers at home. i listen to podcasts all the time, either that or video essays. my favourites are stuff on true crime and video games.
