If you allow me an opinion: this one's on the FIA. It's not the first time a cover is dislodged and cause problems (2019 Azerbaijan GP FP1, 2020 Portuguese GP FP3). One would think that by now there would be a Safety protocol for street circuits, with one of the points being "Verify the security of all drain covers and assure that they can't be lifted by drag forces". This would be specially important regarding current ground effect specs. The fact that they had no idea if the drain covers would hold up the cars passing at full speed over them is an indicator that somebody is not doing their work. And the one who should look up for safety is the FIA.

This entire day so far is showing how good most track organizers are. If this was test by F1 to see how much better they would do, it's showing they're delusional about their own organisational skills.

That on top of how detached they are from the fans, both more newer casual fans to more hardcore fans. I can't speak for the superrich but I suspect that even they would be embarrassed about this.

[โ€“] [email protected] 6 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

In this case it wasn't the weld that broke, but the concrete which is more difficult to test. But yeh, makes them look very stupid.

Stands evacuated for logistic reasons. No fans attending FP2.

[โ€“] [email protected] 12 points 10 months ago

Damn, I'd be pissed if I paid so much money for tickets and the stay.

[โ€“] [email protected] 7 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Why? What is the "logistics" reason, anyone know?

[โ€“] [email protected] 8 points 10 months ago (1 children)

People needed for security, maintenance, etc had to left, afaik.

Sainz will take part of FP2, but will most probably be penalized for the battery replacement.

[โ€“] [email protected] 20 points 10 months ago (1 children)

This is jut ridiculous. F1 and FIA fucked up the security and Ferrari gets penalized for it.

[โ€“] [email protected] 7 points 10 months ago (4 children)

Not trolling, genuinely asking. Why do you say this? I have been working 18 hour shifts all week and have not been able to follow up on anything F1 related. Could you post the backstory or some links where I can inform myself please?

[โ€“] [email protected] 18 points 10 months ago (1 children)

The damage to the Ferrari car floor, battery and even the monocoque was caused by improperly secured drain covers. FIA should have found this problem before allowing cars on track. F1 as organizer should have done a better job preventing this in total.

So while usually the track organizer is not actually F1 itself you can argue it's not their fault something like this happens, in this case it's stupid that the problem is caused by the entities that are also applying the penalties to the victim of their negligence.

[โ€“] [email protected] 10 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I understand what you mean. Thank you for taking the time to answer. I appreciate it.

[โ€“] [email protected] 7 points 10 months ago

I just want to comment to say how I appreciate this friendly and informative conversation! Have a great weekend!

10 places may be the penalty imposed. Sad.

[โ€“] [email protected] 3 points 10 months ago

According to F1TV commentary, he would go back 10 places on the start grid.

Am I just being old and grumpy for disliking the neon advertisements? The commentators can't stop talking about how pretty they think it is, but I'm not seeing it. It's reminding me of cyberpunk 2077 except that in there it's pretty clear that those lights are indicative of society taking a wrong turn and ending up in a dystoptian hellscape.

I know the other tracks have ads too, but at least there they aren't pretending it's aesthetically pleasing.

[โ€“] [email protected] 11 points 10 months ago

Visually speaking, light ads (neon, leds) are noisier than passive (printed, painted) ads. It's basically visual pollution. As a kid I used to like it, but as an older person, I prefer calmer environments. I'm also against light pollution. Fireflights have disappeared near and in cities because of this. And we can't see a decent night sky anymore. I may be old and grumpy too... XD

The livestream just concluded, it's going not great so far in "spectacular" Vegas

[โ€“] [email protected] 10 points 10 months ago (1 children)

The shots being set up to show ads aren't obvious at all...

"Look! T-Mobile!" "Look! Google Chrome!" XDDDD

[โ€“] [email protected] 9 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (1 children)

Expected start: 10:30 GMT - 11:30 CET

[โ€“] [email protected] 5 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (1 children)

See you later! Planned start no sooner than 2:00 am local time (10:00 GMT | 11:00 CET), but most probably 2:30 am (10:30 GMT | 11:30 CET). Around 100 minutes (1 1/2 hours) from the post of this message.

[โ€“] [email protected] 4 points 10 months ago

All contingent on repairs and the track has to open to regular traffic at 4am local time.

[โ€“] [email protected] 9 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Apparently they are filling up all hundred drains with cement? What a shitshow.

[โ€“] [email protected] 5 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (1 children)

Correct. They're filling all drains with quick drying cement.

[โ€“] [email protected] 5 points 10 months ago (1 children)
[โ€“] [email protected] 4 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Local laws forbid them to solder the covers (that was the solutions when these incidents happened in the past), so they had to fill the holes with concrete.

[โ€“] [email protected] 7 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I would think this will be a lot of work to "undo" after the race.

[โ€“] [email protected] 3 points 10 months ago (1 children)

That's a problem for future them... XDDDDD

[โ€“] [email protected] 2 points 10 months ago

haha indeed!

This one brings serious 2019 Azerbaijan GP FP1 vibes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5f87xjg-m4
It was George Russell's misfortune that time. And a cover got loose at the 2020 Portuguese GP FP3 too

Gawd damn. Toto absolutely ripped into one of the journalist's questions at the press conference.

Dude just got headphoned.

[โ€“] [email protected] 8 points 10 months ago

Is it just me or has Toto been grumpy af lately? I mean I get that journalists can be annoying but this was just over the top.

[โ€“] [email protected] 6 points 10 months ago

I wonder how he would have reacted if it was one of his cars that was damaged instead of Sainz...

[โ€“] [email protected] 5 points 10 months ago

It took me a while to get the reference, but then I remembered. RIP headphones... XDDDD

[โ€“] [email protected] 5 points 10 months ago (1 children)

And it's over. Track repairs held the whole session. I hope the information gathered by the teams is valuable. And that it doesn't rain, and track doesn't lose the rubber it got.

[โ€“] [email protected] 3 points 10 months ago

I hope this race is so fucking bad that they cancel any future races here unless Vegas builds a dedicated track. This notion of holding a street race in Vegas is just bonkers crazy and will never result in an interesting event. Itโ€™ll be Monaco, but without any of Monacoโ€™s redeeming qualities.
