CLAIM: Security camera footage from Jan. 6, 2021, shows a federal agent disguised as a supporter of then-President Donald Trump during the attack on the U.S. Capitol.

AP’S ASSESSMENT: False. The footage shows Kevin James Lyons, a Chicago man who was sentenced in July to more than four years in federal prison for his role in the attack. Multiple images of Lyons at the Capitol, dressed as he is in the footage, appear in court documents.

THE FACTS: After House Speaker Mike Johnson on Friday began releasing thousands of hours of footage from the Capitol insurrection, social media users — including members of Congress — seized on a clip they claimed proved that undercover federal agents participated in the riot.

Ahh, I see. So their real purpose all along in releasing footage was to use it as propaganda, not to get to the truth. Is anybody surprised by this?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 10 months ago

Most of us assumed this the moment he announced its release.

As I said when Johnson released the footage, it's not going to be any change to what know really happened, there's just going to be all sorts of wild conspiracy theories coming out of idiots seeing blurry images and claiming false things, and the fact checks will disprove them but the fact checks don't get spread to the people who believe the false claims.

Worse, those people have convinced themselves that fact checkers are "deep state," so the presence of fact checkers debunking their claims they just take as further confirmation, because "why would the deep state have to try and debunk something if it wasn't true in the first place?"

These people have left object reality and we can't keep pretending that we can bring them back with truth and logic.

Edit: typo

It is unclear exactly what Lyons is holding in his right hand when he flashes his palms.

It is 100% clear what Lyons is holding in his right hand when he flashes his palms. It's a vape.

@snaptastic, don't forget to check my comment for relevancy.

[–] [email protected] 28 points 10 months ago

Jesus. I don't even vape and I can tell what that is just from seeing people use them around town.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 10 months ago (1 children)

What's the deal with the snaptastic thing? Keep seeing it.

[–] [email protected] -1 points 10 months ago

Jesus Christ between tagging that dude and using the tritest non-comment in history ("I bEt YoU'rE fUn At PaRtIeS") you sound exhausting as fuck

[–] [email protected] 22 points 10 months ago (1 children)

In the picture I saw it looked like one of those card deck shaped vape pens with the mouthpiece sticking out of the top.

[–] [email protected] 24 points 10 months ago

It’s absolutely a box style vape mod.

The cons latch onto some of the dumbest things ever.

And of course, they cannot even be consistent. At the same time as this dumb Qanon-style idiocy, they also cry about how they are "political prisoners" and get wood at the idea of the orange blob pardoning the insurrectionists.

I’m not sure I’m following the comments. It was republicans who made the badge claim, so doesn’t this hurt them?

[–] [email protected] 26 points 10 months ago

Can't prove them wrong if they close their eyes and put their fingers in their ears.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 10 months ago

Not certain I'm following your question well: R's and randos started the claim that j6 had an undercover agent involved and that there's a video, that was just by R's, released that proves that. If you're watching disinformational videos, then adds to the idea that J6 was a setup and that R's are trying to ve transparent. This article clarifies that the video doesn't show an agent at J6.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 10 months ago

Only if their supporters cared about facts. Considering we're talking about MAGAs/republicans, it's safe to assume the truth is immaterial to their talking points.

Every word uttered by a conservative is deception or manipulation. Every word. Honesty has never been a conservative trait.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 10 months ago

Does it matter? They won't admit they were wrong, they'll double down.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

CLAIM: Security camera footage from Jan. 6, 2021, shows a federal agent disguised as a supporter of then-President Donald Trump during the attack on the U.S. Capitol.

The footage shows Kevin James Lyons, a Chicago man who was sentenced in July to more than four years in federal prison for his role in the attack.

THE FACTS: After House Speaker Mike Johnson on Friday began releasing thousands of hours of footage from the Capitol insurrection, social media users — including members of Congress — seized on a clip they claimed proved that undercover federal agents participated in the riot.

“And that ladies and gentlemen is a badge… with a red hat and fully disguised,” reads one post on X that shared a screenshot of the footage paused as Lyons is flashing his palms.

In another, he sits in a car holding a framed photograph from Pelosi’s office, which shows her with the late Congressman John Lewis, a civil rights movement icon who died in July 2020.

More than 700 have been sentenced, with roughly two-thirds receiving terms of imprisonment ranging from three days to 22 years.___This is part of AP’s effort to address widely shared misinformation, including work with outside companies and organizations to add factual context to misleading content that is circulating online.

The original article contains 601 words, the summary contains 214 words. Saved 64%. I'm a bot and I'm open source!

[–] [email protected] 10 points 10 months ago (1 children)

This is actually a bad summary, misses important points like: the misinformation refers to a clip in which Lyons shows his palms in a way similar to how an agent flashes a badge. No badge was really in hand and we was sentenced for his participation in the protest.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 10 months ago

That is often true of this bot.
