When I was a kid, we would spell out "dirty words" in people's phone numbers and call saying we were from the "Telephone Number Decency League". We'd say the naughty word thier number could spell and encourage them to call the phone company to ask for a new phone number.

I've always imagined his moral dilemma was knowing that (after the Nazis were defeated) going ahead with the bomb was wrong, but wanting to do it anyway - because they had become so invested in the idea, and wanted to see if they could.

I'm an atheist, but I also pray to a vague "higher power" every morning. My sense is that the prayer helps whether I believe or not.

It does and in two ways

  1. running a refrigerator with an open door in a closed room makes the room warmer not cooler. The fridge just moves heat around but there is inefficiency too that comes out as excess hear

  2. using energy to cool your personal space, increases global warming leading to a need for more air conditioning
