I was excited to learn about two new terminal emulator app which seemed to have a lot of cool new features, warp and wave. Then I looked closer and found that both are a no go for me.

Warp is closed source and you need to create an account to use your terminal. Jebus Christus, no, thanks, but no.

Wave is an Electron app. While that's better than not having a Linux version, I've seen how Electron apps behave. They are the ones which hog all memory and get killed by the OS first. So that's a no from me too.

I guess I keep my Tilix for now.

I feel I should understand it, but it's just outside of my reach. It's now 10 years after university.

I feel it really depends on the country you work with. Back in Sweden it was such a sausage fest. But since I started working with people from Russia, Ukraine and especially China it changed significantly. OK top management is still full of dudes, but middle management and the people who do the implementation is a good mix. About 40℅ women even in positions of power. Korea seems to be somewhere in the middle.

It's probably 15 years ago I used XMPP the last time. Back then there were many compatibility problems between the apps and especially on the mobile phone with push notifications, etc. There were problems sending media and VOIP calls were non existent outside of the Google clients.

My guess is that some of those things improved but I have not heard anyone in my circles using it, especially since Matrix became a bit more popular, most of the Open Source projects on IRC also moved to Matrix.

I think Matrix is the way to go because you can host your own server and be completely self hosting without a 3rd party involved.

I'm just paraphrasing the article you linked:

How long can the party last? Mr Putin’s attempts to blunt interest-rate rises will lead inflation to rise higher, and last longer, than it would have otherwise. At some point, people may get angry about the rising cost of living. He also cannot run budget deficits for ever. At current rates, Russia’s financial reserves will be exhausted in five years or so; meanwhile, the government faces high borrowing costs. But for now, Mr Putin has a war to win. And so the party goes on.

The software which runs that site needs to be compatible with the ActivityPub protocol. Most of them aren't and it is very difficult and time consuming to add ActivityPub to random software which hasn't been designer for it from the start.

When I hear the word "honor" I mostly only conotate it with honor killings where a brother kills his sister or a father his daughter because she dared to date someone they don't approve off. I've not seen it with my own eyes but read about it many articles in Germany and Sweden where Turkish or Afghan migrants did this.

So for me this word has a ver bad conotation.

As long as the villan is white everything goes.

Ah interesting, that just shows that I have successfully avoided subscribing to those. The few ones with ads I listen to get the ads read by the hosts like in YouTube videos.

Let's hear some stories from the thready-verse about how you guys met your significant other.

For me it was during the first year of COVID, my company asked who from Europe (I was living in Sweden) wanted to go for a three month business trip to coach a big Korean automotive supplier on how to do modern software development. Most of the other people had families and especially during COVID nobody wanted to travel. I said I could do it, even though I never coached before. But because nobody else volunteered they sent me and and another guy who also was single without a family, etc.

I was convinced that the other guy would have good game with the women here, and thought that there is no harm in installing some international dating app and to try my own luck. During COVID I just lost a ton of weight and found new confidence and it was far away from home and what happens in Korea stays in Korea and so on :D

Anyway, to my surprise during the first two weeks I got some matches and I hit it off with one of them. We met and started dating and very quickly fell for each other. Then when the 3 months were over, I asked the company if the customer would still have some use for my skills and they said yes and send me for 3 more months. I had to go back to Sweden to get a new Visa and spent another 2 weeks in quarantine (as the first time). But then the second tree months were over too and I asked again for more. By that time I was really sick of all the time in quarantine and asked if they could move me from the Swedish office to the Korean office and they agreed.

I went back to Sweden, threw away most of my stuff and put the most valuable things up on a friends attic and moved to Korea with one suitcase. I stayed at AirBnB's for two more months and then we found an apartment and moved in together.

She has a daughter from a previous marriage and we now have a 1.5 year old son together and we still live in Korea :D

Peppermint tea (piefed.jeena.net)

Our neighbor grew peppermint in some pots but the plants are happily growing to everywhere so they grew from his side to our side.

Today I brought my scissors and cut off a bunch of them and made peppermint tea marrocean style.

So first brew a bit of green tea which we got from some work colleagues of my partner from China. Then throw away the first tea brewed because it has some flavors we don't like. After that put it as much peppermint as fitts in and put a rediciolous amount of sugar on top. Put boiling water on it and brew for some time.

Both hot and cold it's like drinking peppermint candy, delicious!

Midsummer dinner (piefed.jeena.net)

Last Friday was midsummer, but because I'm not in Sweden but in Korea I had to improvise with ingredients which I could find here.

  • Toast Skagen
  • Fried salmon
  • Gravad lax
  • Crisp bread with cheese
  • This years small potatoes
  • Absolut vodka
  • Danish Heineken
  • Danish Somersby apple cider
  • Strawberries with whipped cream

I speak Polish, German, Swedish and English. 3 of them are Germanic languages so they were easy to learn because they are so closely related. Polish and German I learned as a child so it was kind of automatic.

Now I have to learn Korean and struggle so much! After 3 months I have learned about 100 words. Any tips how to get to the first 1000 words Ina reasonable time? Especially in a language where none of the words seem to resamle anything from my previous languages.

TLDR: The main reason was Lemmy hogging server resources.

Last year, during the Reddit 2023 API controversy I finally deleted my account and moved on to Lemmy. Here’s a look at my experiences and why I eventually decided to switch to PieFed.
