i like arma 3 but it's got a bit of a steep learning curve if that's a problem for OP, and is definitely lacking in accessibility unfortunately

i can recommend battlebit, very clear visuals and it's fun. also insurgency sandstorm, not sure how active it is nowadays but I bet he'd like that one too

you've already got the green thumb, maybe look into mycology (mushrooms)? lots of fun to learn, especially when you get into agar and stuff. although, might not be the biggest time occupier that you're looking for

i just installed it about a week ago and it's been good to me. used arch for years but i'm tired of fixing random shit in updates
