Biden, a supposed foreign policy pragmatist, doesn’t seem bothered that the US is one of the few states that continues to wholeheartedly sustain Israel’s war on Gaza. In fact, Biden has staked his political future on his support for Netanyahu and Israel – and Biden is losing. In this year’s presidential election, where he will most likely face Donald Trump once again, Biden has already lost support among young progressives, Black and Arab American voters, who are all rightfully angry at his refusal to restrain Israel.

Biden allies are raising the alarm that he could lose Michigan, a swing state with substantial Black, Arab and Muslim American voting blocs, because of his Middle East policies. Congressman Ro Khanna, a Biden supporter and progressive Democrat from California who has tried to mediate between Biden’s campaign and Michigan Democrats, warned his team this week: “We cannot win Michigan with status quo policy.”

The Biden administration has consistently underplayed the leverage it has over Israel and Netanyahu. “I think that sometimes people pretend that the United States of America has a magic wand that it can wave to make any situation in the world roll out in exactly the way that we would want it to and that is never the case,” Matthew Miller, the state department spokesperson, said at a press conference on 12 February.

Miller’s flippant comment raises an important question: if Biden can’t use billions of dollars in military aid – and the ability to literally cut off Israel’s supply of bombs – to force Netanyahu to accept a ceasefire, what could Biden do with a magic wand?

And if he cuts Israel loose, he loses MORE votes AND donations thanks to the large block of Jewish voters and fundraisers.

He's taking a calculated risk. Yes, supporting Israel might cost him Michigan, do you want him losing the Jewish vote which then puts states like New York, New Jersey, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and California in play?

He has a path to victory without Michigan, he has NONE without California and New York.

Supporting israel does not have to mean blindly continue their Genocide. Surely there are more moderate options

There are many Jews that oppose what israel is doing right now.

Jewish Voice for Peace estimates more than 1,500 protesters calling for permanent ceasefire blocked cars amid holiday traffic

The remaining ~~Jews~~ Zionists can choose between having a ceasefire in Gaza or the guy which had a book of Hitler quotes next to his bed

Ivana Trump told her lawyer Michael Kennedy that from time to time her husband reads a book of Hitler's collected speeches, "My New Order," which he keeps in a cabinet by his bed.

Oh no, doing the right thing has a risk of downside! No one has ever faced such a moral dilemma before.

I wouldn't want to be associated with anybody who thinks that what's going on over there is okay and needs my guns or dollars to enable it.

He needs to sack up and tell Israel to give Netanyahu the boot or we are not giving them any more money.

I won't really be happy until Netanyahu is sitting in the hague with all of his little genocidal cronies.

I cannot for the life of me understand why we NEED to be funding this... I understand the history, I read up more about the arming of Israel to get them up to speed, but now they're fully capable of creating their own arms and have an arms industry that's as advanced as our own. They don't need us anymore. but nope, gotta maintain that "relationship" so we can protect our oil interests in the middle east... As usual it's fucking oil...

Drake meme: social spending here that cost 1billion+ nahhhh!

Sending 1billion+ for weapons to Israel, yeahhhhh!

They want this war, let them fund it...

At this point, it's not about needing to support Israel, it's all about needing the campaign donations.

Nobody is going to let Israel twist in the wind with millions of dollars on the line.

It's not just Michigan. There are many battleground states where his campaign is at risk without Muslims and Black people, and there's no way he's winning at all without high young progressive turnout (one of, if not the, most important factors in his 2020 victory). Also the Jewish community in the US is very much not a monolith regarding Israeli aid.

which then puts states like New York, New Jersey, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and California in play?

Florida also has a large population of Jewish voters, although the state has been trending red in recent election cycles.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 6 months ago (3 children)

Yeah, no matter what he does, he's not winning Florida. ;)

It went Blue for Obama twice, Clinton once and Carter, but it's ruby red otherwise.

Look at the guys they keep electing to governor...
