"If the chattering classes of Europe need a cautionary tale, they can look further afield than Japan. Michael Deacon's recent column casts a dire portrait using a simple formula: fewer babies in Japan equals societal collapse, and by that logic, Britain's increasing childlessness threatens to do the same. But this logic is flawed at its core, and to assume British millennials' choices stem from mere selfishness is to misunderstand the situation entirely."

Given tory voters spent most of the 80s and 90s. Arguing that poor people should.d not have children if they cannot afford it.

The whole idea that not doing so is selfish. Shows how freaking arrogant the right wing always are,

It shows they always argue in bad faith.

Pointless to engage with them in it.

I'm so goddamn sick of the same story... As an older millennial for my entire life each milestone was just a big "fuck you."

Graduated highschool into the Iraq war, so fuck joining the military to fight for Haliburton and Raytheon.

College age financial collapse, so fucked on finding a good job.

Clawed my way up to make enough to consider home buying, nope here comes COVID, the WFH movement, AND ~~parasites~~ investment companies jacking prices through the roof.

But no, Mr.Mrs. wealthy boomer, tell me again how it's my fault you guys ruined society.

I know it's a UK story, but it's not much different here in freedumb land

Yeah I hate this shit. I'm a few years younger though. Nothing like being 18 and the only places hiring are McDonald's and temp labor. I'm where I should be able to afford a house only for interest rates to be jacked while prices go through the roof.

They made Social Reproduction impossible, and are now shocked by a collapse of social reproduction

I'm confused here...

The "horse and sparrow" types have been telling us to not spend money unnecessarily. This will lead to being able to afford more bootstraps.

Soon we realize that children are crazy expensive. Doubly so here in Freedom-land where you're lucky if you get more than a few weeks off of work and a $75k hospital bill. Which your insurance company will fight to the bitter end.

So we decide to be responsible and postpone family plans until we can afford it without going into debt for the rest of our lives.

And now there's a moral panic about that?!

Pick one! Give up your monthly mega-yacht and allow the breeder class to get caught up financially, or stop griping about millennials postponing having children.
