And make it open in Firefox, right. Right?

[–] [email protected] 13 points 8 months ago (1 children)

That's already possible. I have my default browser set as Firefox and for Google to open links in browser.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 8 months ago

Wow. I did not know about that at all, thanks

[–] [email protected] 9 points 8 months ago (3 children)

Just for anyone looking how to do this, you should have your default web browser set to Firefox (settings -> apps -> default apps) then swipe up from the home screen, search for the "Google" app, tap your profile picture in the top right, and go to settings -> general -> uncheck "Open web pages in the app."

I started with this, but I have trained myself to use the search bar at the bottom of the home page as the beginning so often. That automatically opens Chrome regardless, unless you switch launcher.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 8 months ago (1 children)

I use the search bar on the home screen with the above settings, and it opens search results in firefox.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

Cool! Very good to know

[–] [email protected] 2 points 8 months ago

Thank you for this!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 8 months ago

Omg amazing

I wish they'd get rid of the hard coded day and date on the first screen. Who thought that was a good idea?

[–] [email protected] 13 points 8 months ago (2 children)

This is the reason I'm using Lawnchair at the moment.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 8 months ago (2 children)

apart from curiosity, the search bar is the main reason I switched to GrapheneOS on my 7a

[–] [email protected] 5 points 8 months ago (1 children)

It's the reason I use the Nova Launcher

[–] [email protected] 3 points 8 months ago (1 children)

How is it compared to the stock OS?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago) (1 children)

It's lighter as I get to decide what to keep, no loss of functionality as I can still install the Pixel apps from the Play Store if I want to (but with the advantage of added security from GrapheneOS as I can disable their network access among other things), except for Google Pay NFC payments which don't work for now. We have a sticky thread about GrapheneOS if you want to know others' impressions: https://lemmy.world/post/9432155

does split screen work with custom launchers in Graphene OS? I use Neo Launcher on my Pixel (stock) and split screen doesn't work at all.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 8 months ago (1 children)

I just tried Neo Launcher and set it as the default one and split screen seems to work fine.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 8 months ago

Thats good to hear. Thanks for checking. Graphene OS team did an amazing job with their OS.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Isn't lawnchair dangerous to use since it hasn't been supported for 3 years? Just asking, simply an assumption on my side.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 8 months ago (1 children)

If there's some security vulnerability, perhaps. That said it's not ingesting data from the web. It's ingesting data from me and some of the installed apps. It's not a huge attack surface. I haven't heard of CVEs for Pixel Launcher for example. Doesn't mean there weren't any. With all that said, I'm using the actively developed version.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Actively developed? The most recent update I can remember was August 2022

[–] [email protected] 5 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago) (1 children)

Look on GitHub. There are daily builds for the actively developed branch. When I checked a few months ago, new features and fixes landed often.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Yeah okay, fair enough. But still, nothing for us users since August 2022

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Again, there are daily builds that can be downloaded straight from GitHub and installed. That's what I'm running. The only significant downside to it is that new builds don't install over old builds so you have to backup/restore via the launcher's settings.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago) (1 children)

Okay, I think I just didn't understand what you meant.

Where do I find these daily builds though? I'm being extremely oblivious right now

Edit:
Found it, but I'd need to make a Github account to access these debug APKs

Could be the case. I'm almost always logged in. MS started putting some Github features behind login over the last year.

I only use Lawnchair because of the Arcticons icon pack, it doesn't seem to work with the default trebuchet launcher. At least it didn't last time I checked.

All the other launchers Arcticons supports are either exclusive to the Play Store, or simply not what I like, so Lawnchair it is.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 8 months ago

About damn time.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Wow, that's perfect. I'm actually really used to Niagara Launcher right now but I might consider Pixel Launcher. It's just sooo smooth on a Pixel, no other launcher quite gets there, even Niagara.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 8 months ago (2 children)

I've really come to like Nova. It's one of the few that is as smooth as the pixel launcher

[–] [email protected] 6 points 8 months ago (1 children)

It's not. Particularly the switch to a multitasking view and some animations cannot be as smooth for any third party launcher due to the fact that the required API is not available to them. I don't remember the details but I think it's only available to system apps? I know it can be achieved with root but I don't want that.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

Just switched to Nova Launcher on my Pixel 7 about a month ago. Every once in a while —like, maybe once a week or so—it'll take about a quarter second to load the home screen when I go to home. About as frequently, there will be a slight visual glitch when I launch an app, where the icon zooms out instead of in; but that doesn't affect how long it takes to launch the app. I've also noticed an increase in my battery life, despite tripling the number of widgets since switching to Nova.

Anecdote isn't the singular of data, though.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 8 months ago

I've been using Nova for years and love it too, but it seems to be a bit unstable on my Pixel 7 Pro. Sometimes when pressing the home button, I just get a blank wallpaper until trying again. Other times the launcher freezes until I go into settings and force close it. It's not happening often enough to make me switch yet, but often enough to be annoying.

Wow. I might actually use it if this happens...
