Owncast is a free and open source live video and web chat server for use with existing popular broadcasting software.

Basically it's Twitch, or any streaming platform such as YouTube Gaming or whatever it's called now, that you can run on your own hardware. Control your platform and your content where you make the rules as to what you can/can't do.

There's a growing community and you can find folks streaming all kinds of things in the directory:

https://directory.owncast.online/

I know some folks think it's not possible to run something like that as it'd require tons of PC resources, but I've run an Owncast Stream with 70+ active open connections to the server on a $8/month VPS.

The install can be as simple as a VPS that will spin up an Owncast instance for you, or as "difficult" as pulling the Owncast script and running it and it just automatically sets everything up. It's probably the easiest software installation I've done in a long time and I've been in IT for 15 years.

I also run the [email protected] community so if anyone has any questions please don't hesitate to poke me there or Matrix or come check out a stream, I'm usually hanging out on someone's stream somewhere. :-D Or don't hesitate to ping me on any one of the platforms in my bio.

Not all companies NEED cloud and containers. But execs push it anyway. That's my point. As I said, they have actual use, but not EVERYONE NEEDS this shit. It's just tech-bros telling us we need it and execs being too stupid to know otherwise.

The next big thing is moving all of your servers to the cloud!

The next big thing is moving all of your software to containers!

The next big thing is moving all of your money to crypto!

The next big thing is moving everything to AI!

Yes we're in ANOTHER tech gold rush. Not saying these things don't have their place, but the tech industry is infatuated with the next big thing and burning through money and the ones that get burnt are the average working folks. Ask me how I know, currently in year two of a hiring and pay freeze as AWS isn't as cheap as predicted... Who could have fucking guessed? They mean besides everyone but the CTO that's fucking who!

I've been on Proton for years and I've had a Visionary account for years. Proton's price doesn't really go up, but the quality and features does immensely. They give me extra storage every year. I get more VPNs, more password managers, more and more and more. IMO they have a track that shows they care about privacy and want to make things better.

Telegram is giving away FREE Premium subscriptions! All they need from you is to use your cell phone as a relay to text out their OTP codes! And the recipient of the OTP sees your phone number! What could POSSIBLY go wrong with this deal?

PLEASE don't use Telegram! I personally recommend Matrix as it's totally FOSS, you can self host, there are tons of front end clients to choose from. Or even use Signal. I have my own issues with Signal, the fact they don't allow third party clients, you can't self-host, they have a proprietary shim in their stack that only they know what it does, they were pushing crypto, etc, but at least Signal is better than this garbage.

Well aware. And I trust Proton more than my local ISP.

Because the average person doesn't have a clue and they never think about this kind of thing. I've been called a conspiracy theorist by my own father as well as othesr for mentioning Snowden revalatins and using a VPN and all the privacy steps I take on the web.

They just joined the Fediverse as well at:

I've never played Roblox or Fortnite so I have no reference there. But The Mirror, while still Alpha, was lots of fun to try out and works just fine on Linux out of the box for me on Debian using the Itch Flatpak.

We can thank US Government for FORCING these companies to allow you to freeze your credit report. It used to be a state by state thing, else you had to pay them like $10 to freeze and unfreeze, unless you had PROOF that your identity was stolen.

Especially considering Equifax had that little "oopsy" (they already leaked all your personal info) 7 years ago, you should absolutely 100% freeze your credit report.

YES you have to unfreeze it when you're needed to check your credit, but how often does that happen?

Honestly it's a great excuse to turn down a pushy salesman as well. "Well I really wanna buy this car, but I have to unfreeze my credit report first and my info is at home, so I'll be back."

And do you REALLY need that 10th credit card for get that $10 coupon for Khols? Nah.

It's a bit of work to set up, but once you set it up don't forget you get a free credit report yearly from each bureau. So space them out every 4 months and then check them yearly.

I stopped using it years ago because they were going downhill and still collecting your private information. I run my own SearXNG now. It proxies from multiple sources, no ads, no tracking. I really enjoy SearXNG as it's mine.

"Reddit has given access to YOUR conversations and posts to AI companies.". FTFY

These were created by people, for peoole, and I will ALWAYS disagree that this data is Reddit's or any other platforms.

Don't forget your direct messages aren't end to end encrypted on Reddit, so now AI will be trained on your craziest "private" conversations

Pretty sure it's denying coup attempts.

A great video about the Manifest v3 and how Google is trying to make you view ads.
