Billie Eilish is the latest high-profile entertainer to back Vice President Harris’s White House bid, urging her fans to “vote like your life depends on it.”

“We are voting for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz because they are fighting to protect our reproductive freedom, our planet and our democracy,” Eilish said in a video posted on social media on Tuesday.

“We can’t let extremists control our lives, our freedoms and our future,” Eilish’s brother and longtime collaborator, Finneas O’Connell, said in the message shared with the “Lunch” singer’s more than 7 million followers on X.

“The choice is clear,” the post said.

For US citizens there is another petition which you can sign : https://www.oxfamamerica.org/take-action/action-alert-tax-the-rich/

American billionaires are 33% richer than they were at the start of the pandemic, all while inequality has worsened and inflation has soared. Billionaires like Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos pay a “true tax rate" of just 3% or less while working people around the globe pay far more.

Enough is enough. It’s time for the ultra-rich to pay their fair share of taxes.

Just a modest tax of up to 5 percent on the world’s richest individuals could bring in $1.7 trillion in a year, enough to lift 2 billion people out of poverty.

Sign your name and demand that President Biden, Congress, and world leaders address the inequality crisis globally and here at home by making multi-millionaires and billionaires pay their fair share of taxes.

The French have been really great with this petition, showing the way.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 month ago (2 children)

The petition is about getting enough signatures for the EU. France and Germany have already enough votes.
If the petition succeeds this could bring in a lot of money that is otherwise not used for the public.
Please sign for our climate and our future.

Ex-president quickly broke away from prepared speech to accuse vice-president of being a communist and a fascist

“They’ll say he was rambling. I don’t ramble. I’m a really smart guy, you know, really smart. I don’t ramble. But the other day, anytime I hit too hard, they say he was rambling, rambling,” he said.

Heritage Foundation leader has long received spiritual guidance from group and his policy goals align with its teachings

Plant names are only a part of the taxonomic controversy, however. Naming animals after racists, fascists and other controversial figures cause just as many headaches as those posed by plants, say scientists. Examples include a brown, eyeless beetle which has been named after Adolf Hitler. Nor is Anophthalmus hitleri alone. Many other species’ names recall individuals that offend, such as the moth Hypopta mussolinii.

The International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN) has so far refused to consider changing its rules to allow the removal of racist or fascist references. Renaming would be disruptive, while replacement names could one day be seen as offensive “as attitudes change in the future”, it announced in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society last year.

After I'd read that the Trump shooter had looked at photos of Trump and Biden and their upcoming speech locations and the fact that the shooter was a lone wolf and bullied at school, I read part of the Wikipedia page about the Uvalde shooting . The Uvalde shooter also was a lone wolf and also used an AR-15. My thoughts right now are like this :

  • The lone wolfs probably have suffered badly from an inferior complex due to bullying and alienation
and wanted to do something which made them feel historically "significant" instead of feeling completely"useless".

  • The US appears to have a pretty dominant machismo culture (Think about GOP with their MAGA, it is humiliating for women and minority groups) and so-called snowflakes are looked down upon. This is very bad for everyone involved.

  • Cops are afraid of citizens having an AR-15 on them.

What can be done ?

  • Should vote with our wallets ? Like stop using exTwitter now that Elon Musk has publicly shown support for Trump ? (On Mastodon I've seen many comments about people that did cancel their subscription to the New York Times and that seemed to have some effect. Finally the NYT is posting more critical articles about Trump and Project 2025.)

  • Should people talk more often to each other and avoid alienation ? In books of Gabor Maté he talks about the fact that most people in society look down on hard drug addicts but these junkies are still human beings. And the same goes for homeless people and refugees of course. They are still human beings. No need to automatically view them as inferior beings, right ?

  • Should we limit our screen time on mobile phones ? Are we silently producing a sort of zombies that cannot think for themselves anymore ? Should tech companies be obliged to make phone apps less addictive ?

  • Should mobile phone usage during class in school be forbidden ?

  • Should we promote exchange projects as part of cultural improvement ? Like say 50 people from Congo Republic in Africa swap places with 50 people from California for 1 year, and then after swapping back talk about the experiences.

  • Should we in our education system or during leisure time educate people more on what happened in World War II and what we can still learn from that ? For example the book by Umberto Eco about how to recognize a fascist ( Ur-Fascism ) could be used.

    • Should bullying at school be pro-actively approached and make victims and bullies talk to each other under professional supervision ?

In some open source projects there is a lot of leeching and little contributions.

In 2020 the sole developer of Invidious stepped away from development because of burn out. https://omar.yt/posts/stepping-away-from-open-source

Also in 2020 developer Raymond Hill archived the uMatrix browser add-on https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=24532973

I will never hand over development to whoever, I had my lesson in the past -- I wouldn't like that someone would turn the project into something I never intended it to become (monetization, feature bloat, etc.). At most I would archive the project and whoever is free to fork under a new name. For now I resisted doing this, so people will have to be patient for new stable release.

What would actually help is that people help to completely investigate existing issues instead of keep asking me to add yet more features. Turns out people willing to step in the code to investigate and pinpoint exactly where is an issue (or that there is no issue) is incredibly rare.

Can you insert Lp0 on fire as well ? :) https://en-academic.com/dic.nsf/enwiki/7306628

lp0 on fire (aka Printer on Fire) is a semi-obsolete error message still generated on some Unix/Linux operating systems in response to certain types of printer errors. lp0 is the Unix device handle for the first line printer, but the error can be displayed for any printer attached to a Unix/Linux system.

My guess is that a 2015 Macbook Air is probably not going to run a MacOS version that is still supported by Apple. That would be yet another reason to simply install Linux. Before you do so you can go for https://rescuezilla.com/ and do disk cloning to an image that you save to some storage like a USB disk. If you do the same after your installing and tweaked Linux installation, you can have the best of both worlds whenever you need it.
