A man from the Soviet Union wants a new washing machine, but he can't afford to buy it. Fortunately he works at a washing machine factory, so he decides to steal one part every day until he has everything he needs. A year later he finally has all of the parts and begins assembling it in the evening. By the next morning, he realizes he's built a T-34 tank.

It wasn't uncommon for Soviet military installations to be disguised (poorly) as civilian buildings. They lied to everyone, even the workers themselves, but it was an open secret. I wouldn't be surprised if they brought the practice back.

It's the Rankine. Some Scottish dude wanted to use Kelvin without using Kelvin. It's basically the Fahrenheit scale but with 0˚R set at absolute zero.

0˚R = 0K and 1˚R = 0K + 1˚F

It was school work. All I needed was some proper visual indentations and a monospaced font.

I once wrote C# code in MS Word because the only other option was Notepad.

Revelation is one of the most quoted judeo-christian texts, and I recently learned that it was written as a fanfic and it took the fandom a surprisingly long time to recognise it as part of the official lore.

AntiMicroX. Simple graphical application to rebind controller inputs to keyboard and mouse actions. You're welcome.

Modern, performant computer graphics is an incredibly complex topic full of hacks, workarounds, and edge cases. It's possible that an update to DirectX/OpenGL/Vulkan caused some edge case interaction between the application and the graphics pipeline to fail somewhere. Updating the GPU driver (mesa, nvidia, amdgpu, or whatever Windows equivalent) could mitigate that failure.

I remember having to update the Nvidia Windows driver when Cyberpunk 2077 was released to fix an issue related to transparent foliage (transparency is always a pain in the ass to deal with).

If you consider gross misuse (i.e. mixing up "theory" and "hypothesis") to be a valid form of etymology (e.g. making new words), I have a question to axe.

(I apologize to linguists' families who now have to clean up bodily fluids and/or arrange a funeral.)

In addition to the other comment - "Sappho and her friend" refers to the unfortunate practice by historians of portraying queer relationships in a callously heteronormative way, like referring to Sappho's female lover as "her friend".

Do not touch The Coconut!

For example, drilling or enlarging a hole can be boring, but fixing two pieces of metal together is often riveting.

It's a poor imitation. A mockery of the name. A GUI addict's idea of a CLI tool.

I recently switched from wireless to wired headphones (Samson SR-850, probably the best for the very reasonable price) and my chair's wheels instantly started eating its cable. Right now I'm using a small plastic hook that came with a face mask to keep it off the floor, but I'd like to hear other solutions.

Some things are just universally true.

In the alternate universe, Ford Renault is still a dick.

I think Starfield's main menu is neat. So I made it into a desktop widget. Files (including the stylized logo) here, wallpaper here.

I used the Chakra Petch font (AUR: ttf-chakra-petch) for the menu buttons, and Liberation Sans (with some editing in Inkscape) for the logo.

I'm not trying to attack him, but this is pretty funny.

Context: 11 days ago DT released a video where he called out the people who refer to Linux distributions as "Linux" as opposed to "GNU/Linux". Today he released a video where he did exactly that.

It might not look like anything special, but I spent an embarrassing number of hours on this rice, mostly on the non-graphical user interactions. The layout is a custom master-stack implementation, the groupbox widget is an almost complete reimplementation to support a more flexible styling on multihead systems, the Nvidia GPU monitor widget is completely my own, there are popups and context menus out the ass, and there is a persistence module that saves dynamic data (like layouts and group names) between sessions.

Tomorrow I'm moving to Wayland and I might not have the patience to get Qtile running again.
