Hi! Just a quick announcement that I plan to drop support for Lemmy 0.18 in the Voyager app on March 18 2024.

Due to authentication changes in lemmy 0.18->0.19, this means that you will be unable to login to instances running lemmy 0.18.

Most instances have already upgraded to 0.19. I encourage Instances running 0.18 to upgrade as soon as possible. Those instances include:

  • lemmy.world (✅ ~~upgrade planned~~ upgraded March 3rd)
  • sh.itjust.works (✅ ~~upgrade planned~~ upgraded Feb 29th)
  • lemmy.blahaj.zone (✅ ~~upgrade planned~~ upgraded March 9th)
  • beehaw.org (⚠️ unknown upgrade timeline)

If you are a user on beehaw.org, please let your instance administrator know.

In addition, if you are on a very small instance, please check that it is running lemmy 0.19. You can do so by going to the community list -> header ellipse icon -> instance sidebar -> version listed at end of instance statistics.

This deadline will only be extended if lemmy.world is unable to upgrade by March 18.

If you are self-hosting Voyager, you can continue connecting to a v0.18 instance past this date by staying on Voyager 1.x (I will be dropping lemmy 0.18 support as a major version bump).

Old Reddit with Reddit Enhancement Suite used to allow the user to see the number of upvotes and downvotes on a post that comprised the score. It was nice to know if a post with a score of -10 was 3 upvotes and 13 downvotes or 103 upvotes with 113 downvotes.

Some communities, like fark, let you annotate users that you interact with so that when you interact with them in the future have an idea about the previous context with them.

I think that would be a good feature for lemmy, able to add a note/nick name that displays any time you see a comment or post by that user

I'd like to be able to find a list of posts I've actually opened do I can go back and find articles and such that I didn't finish reading. I can't find a way to do this so far but if there is a way I'd be happy to learn!

5

Just wondering if it would be possible to (have an option to) show who posted each post in the All or Local views.

6

When creating a posts (with an image) I can't add images to the body field, without all images failing. This works fine when i access lemmy on my browser and used to work fine with Lemmy Connect when i had that, but it seems to be a problem with Voyager

7

On other apps, when an image or video is posted I can long press on it to copy a direct link to it. The best I could find in Voyager is to copy a link to the lemmy post or open the post in a browser. This makes it hard for me to share memes with friends who don't use Lemmy. But maybe this feature already exists and I don't know where to find it. I just started using Voyager yesterday.

8

Apologies if this has been asked before, the search wasn’t returning much. But is it possible to post lists in a comment through the voyager app?

9

on android long pressing links just "drags" them as if there was some place i could drop them, but i have found no such place.
i think a much more straightforward and useful feature would be to just offer to copy or open the link externally

An Apps Experiment

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/18159531

Introduction

This is an experiment I performed out of curiosity, and I have a few big disclaimers at the bottom. Basically, I've seen a lot of comments recently about one app or another not displaying something right. Lemmy has been around for a while now and can no longer be considered an experimental platform.

Lemmy and the apps that people use to access the platform have become an important part of people’s lives. Whether you are checking the app weekly or daily, and whether you use it to stay up on the news or to stay connected to your hobby, it’s important that it works. I hope that this helps people to see the extent of the challenge, and encourages developers to improve their apps, too.

How I did it

I wanted to investigate objectively how accurately each app displays text of posts and comments using the standard Lemmy markdown. Markdown is a standard part of the Lemmy platform, but not all apps handle it the same. It is basically what gives text useful formatting.

I used the latest release of each app, but did not include pre-releases. I only included apps that have released an update in the last 6 months, which should include most apps in active development. I was unable to test iOS-exclusive apps, so they are not included either. In all, 16 apps met the inclusion criteria.

Each app was rated in 5 categories: Text, Format, Spoilers, Links, and Images. I chose these mostly based on the wonderful Markdown Guide from @[email protected], which was posted about a year ago in [email protected] (here).

I checked whether each app correctly displayed each category, then took the overall average. Each category was weighted equally. Text includes italic, bold, strong, strikethrough, superscript, and subscript. Format includes block quotes, lists, code (block and inline), tables, and dividers. Spoilers includes display of hidden, expandable spoilers. Links includes external links, username links, and community links. Images included embedded images, image references, and inline images.

In each case, I checked whether the display was correct based on the rules for Lemmy Markdown, and consistent with the author’s intent. In cases where the app recognized the tag correctly but did not display it accurately, that was treated as a fail.

Results

Out of a possible perfect 10, only 3 apps displayed all markdown correctly:

Jerboa (Official) - 10.0

Alexandrite - 10.0

Voyager - 10.0

Summit - 9.7

Interstellar - 9.3

Photon - 9.3

Lemmuy - UI - 9.3

Tesseract - 9.0

Thunder - 8.9

mlmym - 8.3

Quiblr - 7.9

Boost - 7.3

Sync - 6.2

Lemmynade - 6.2

Connect - 5.2

Racoon - 4.1

Disclaimers

Disclaimers

I Love Lemmy Apps (and their devs)

Lemmy apps devs work very hard, and invest a lot in the platform. Lemmy is better because they are doing the work that they do. Like, a LOT better. Everyone who uses the platform has access it through one app or another. Apps are the face of the entire platform. Whether an app is a FOSS passion project, underwritten by a grant, or generating income through sales or ads, no one is getting rich by making their app. It is for the benefit of the community.

This is not meant to be a rating of the quality or functionality of any app. An app may have a high rating here but be missing other features that users want, or users may love an app that has a lower rating. This is just about how well apps handle markdown.

This is pretty unscientific

You’ll see my methodology above. I’m not a scientist. There is probably a much better way to do this, and I probably have biases in terms of how I went about it. I think it’s interesting and probably has some valuable information. If you think it’s interesting, let me know. If you think of a better way, PM me and I’d be happy to share what I have so you don’t have to start from scratch.

My only goal is to help the community

I do think that accurately displaying markdown should be a standard expectation of a finished app. I hope that devs use this as an opportunity to shore up the areas that are lagging, and that they have a set of standards to aim for.

I don’t have any Apple things

Sorry. This is just Android and Web review. If someone would like to see how iOS apps are doing, please reach out and I’ll share how we can work together to include them.

It has been asked among other thing 3 months ago, so I'm now bumping it as its own request: I am not on lemmy to see stuff from youtube, twitter, Murdoch-owned trash media, you see the point.

Please add "block by url" to Filters, or have Keywords Filter parse the address the link points to too.

Thanks in advance!

When browsing posts, it's far too easy to click the back navigation button on my device which currently takes me to the Communities page. The problem is, once you move away from the Posts page there doesn't seem to be any way of returning to your previous place in the Posts page.

This could be solved a couple of ways:

  1. Disable the device's back navigation button from moving you away from the Posts page.
  2. Have some method of remembering and returning your the previous place in the Posts page.

I'd love to use this as my main app, but gestures are hard for me. I'd love it if I could tap once on the screen to dismiss media that was brought up by tapping a thumbnail (in compact view). Ideally there would be very little delay between tap and dismiss.

In the context menu on a given post, would it be possible to add an option to block that community (or user) directly?

As it stands now, I'd have to go to that community and then block it from there, unless I'm missing something.

Edit: Disregard. It's already in the software. Long press on the community name let's you block.

Steps to re-create:

  • I start a new thread
  • I upload an image
  • I tap the Post Text body
  • I upload an image to be inserted into the body (Post Text)
  • Nothing appears to happen after upload completes; no image embed markdown is inserted
  • I tap back and see the image I just uploaded to be inserted into the body has instead been uploaded as the main image to be featured in the thread, supplanting the image initially uploaded

Issue present for several weeks on:

  • iOS 17.5.1

  • Voyager 2.13.0

Amount charged for this free software:

  • $0.00

Our dev:

  • Priceless

THANK YOU!

I think this might be a general Lemmy problem but I’m not sure. Is there some way it can be worked around?

17

I have compact appearance enabled. iOS latest version.

On All Communities feed the image preview is now the card style. When I go into individual communities the posts are compact.

Anyone else seeing the same?

"Nothing to see here..."

If you find yourself having to block a user, there should be an option to block all the communities they can moderate as well.

Not a big issue, just a quality of life item

Hi,

I'm not new to Lemmy, but I've only recently gotten Voyager (+ a brand new acct) and it's pretty confusing. I'm looking for an option in the app that shows all possible communities for a given instance. Is that possible?

Thanks~

I tried about 3x to

  1. submit post
  2. upload photo

It wasn't working kept getting failed. What ended up working is I had to click browse my photo gallery, and then I clicked on the photo I wanted to upload and it worked.

In post above, any help here?

Just curious if this is the app. Using android and mullvad app. When the VPN is on I can't post. It just gives an error something like "problem posting, try again". Disabling VPN I can post fine.

Wondering if anyone else had this problem, or it's by design, or a general lemmy thing and not the app?

Thunder Lemmy app shows before posting if the article that is about to be post was already posted to another community or instance. Maybe this feature can be brought to voyager as well?
