Honestly not a big fan of the switch to 3D, but still happy we're getting a new sequel after all these years.

Do you need to play previous games to appreciate Layton series? I've only played the ace attorney crossover and the first 20 min or so of lady Layton.

Not really, they're all self-contained. That said you should play Professor Layton and the Curious Village, it's quite good and has a high quality remaster on mobile phones.
