TL;DR: Any recommendations for a game like Overwatch that actually functions? XDefiant was promising, but it doesn't have "roles" that don't require shooting, so my friend got frustrated.

As it turns out, it is actually possible to make friends as an adult. Who knew?

She likes MOBAs and such, and I mostly go for shooters so Overwatch was an obvious choice.

The gameplay is fun, and it gives us both something we enjoy, but there are some glaring issues that are best described by just describing my own experience in the game.

First off, the game requires you to win 50 matches in quick play before you're allowed in ranked. With both of us working full-time, having spouses and whatnot, and dealing with 3 random teammates, that took forever.

I finally got to ranked, she already had a rank. The game "predicted" my rank to be basically the same as hers. Even so, all that's available are "wide matches". Average wait time is between 20-30 minutes.

So we started a co-op campaign in Baldur's Gate 3.

We still would like to find a competitive game to play together, so basically a functional Overwatch.

And that brings us here. Any ideas?

Amen Brother by The Winstons, more specifically the drum break on it. It's by far the most used sample of any song ever, and once you know of it you'll hear it everywhere kind of like the Wilhelm Scream in movies.

I hate these headlines. Fucking Half Life 3 could be announced.

I literally bought a vape so I wouldn't smoke in my car. It's quite a bit easier to sell a car that smells like raspberries than one that smells like an ashtray.

If that floats your boat, give Fear of the Dark by Graveworm a listen. Iron Maiden lends itself really well to dark metal.

For example, I personally can't listen to Guns and Roses without immediately thinking "that Axl sure is an asshole", and that sours the entire experience.

Holy hell, I learned something today. Might be a matter of a language barrier, since in my native language the word "Satanism" by definition refers to LaVeyan Satanism, and there's a distinct word for Satan's/Devil's worshippers. No idea how that happened.

You're mixing things up. Satanism never believed in literal Satan, that'd be Satan's /Devil's Worshippers, a completely different group of people. "Satanism" was the word used by the ignorant western (mostly US) media during the "Satanic panic" during the '80s-'90s, and it stuck. The Satanic Bible, to which your "modern atheist Satanism" refers to, was written in '69. Nothing to do with literal Satan.

I play exclusively female characters, and also go for the F/F romance when possible. I think it started with fighting games, because female characters were usually faster, and some shooters actually have smaller hitboxes for female models, so there are are actual advantages. But yeah, I'm mostly with you, to the point where my GF laughs at my characters always looking like me with boobs. We're playing through Elden Ring together now, and I'm playing a (F) dex spellblade and she is making a (M) tank with a bonking stick.

I mostly played Blades of Steel (an ice hockey game that turned into a fighting game every few seconds), TMNT and Top Gun. I think I landed on that goddamn carrier like 3 times combined, but it was still a blast! We also had a completely legal cartridge with 250 games on it, so I'm definitely forgetting something. I may need to get a CRT and try if my NES still works.

Thanks for commenting, I didn't expect to find someone on "the other side" of the argument! Just to be clear, can you explain what all these models and calculations accomplish that can't be done with temperature sensors in a few of the apartments, for example? That's the solution that the more advanced systems I've implemented use, and it at least sounds significantly simpler. And no need for a subscription.

I've been working as an automation technician for around 5 years now, and I've come across several services that promise a substantial improvement in energy efficiency when it comes to heating, especially involving district heating with water. Most of these are subscription services.

While they usually quote numbers that are based in reality, the way they are accomplished is often covered in technical jargon and straight up BS that a person without experience won't be able to understand and so believes the seller.

That's where this post comes in.

All that the impressive sounding, weather pattern considering, ultra-futuristic solution really does is take the existing setpoint for the heating system and lowers it by ≈2°C. That's it. One line of code. Takes any competent professional 5 minutes to implement. What's worse, some systems are laid on top of the old one, with a higher priority. Meaning that you need a specialist provided by the "optimization" company to adjust the heating. So if you're too cold or too hot, tough shit. Your building's maintenance company can't change it.

The existing system in most cases already bases its setpoints on the current outside temperature, with a pollrate of around a second. What the weather is going to be like next week, or even tomorrow, does not matter. The system already adjusts the setpoints in real time.

Maybe a bit of a niche rant, but hopefully helps at least someone. Thanks for reading!

We have ads on YSK now?

Thank you! I can't believe that news sites would publish articles like this without a reference link, or even the sample size.

Finally got around to playing F.E.A.R. 1 & 2, now going through the DLC for 1, having a great time despite it definitely showing its age with some design choices, like the mandatory valve puzzles of early 2000's. I'm so glad I bought the RTX 4080 though, definitely getting my money's worth.

I have an Asus PG27AQDM OLED monitor, and the out-of-the-box HDR experience is, well, atrocious. I can make it look better, almost perfect, by messing around with Nvidia control panel, but those settings obviously look awful with HDR disabled. So, is there a way to automatically apply different profiles according to the colour space being used?
