Had this happen at work today and my colleagues looked at me like I was a madman for tying both shoes again, instead of just the one that got loose. But doing both shoes again just makes more sense, because you ensure both shoes are equally tight again.

Am I just weird for doing this?

I only re tie the loose one, I've never heard of anyone redoing both. But your logic is sound. πŸ˜†

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

I retie both about half the time because often times when one side comes loose, the other side is close to being undone. That way I don't have to bend down twice in a short time (I have chronic pain).

[–] [email protected] 34 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I usually start off intending to only retie, then I walk around for a bit, get annoyed, and do the other one.

Your strategy of accepting the inevitable makes more sense which is why I will promptly forget it.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago

This is almost the exact reply I was about to write.

The difference is that if I was in a hurry to do something right before it came loose I will only tie the one, and go back for the other one the time pressure was over.

But that's probably true for all of us, so kinda redundant.

What’s your job?

I do this too, but only after a few years of IT where I learned that if one thing breaks it’s counterpart would soon break so might as well fix/replace while I’m working on the original problem.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 year ago

I'm a chef, so being able to walk around comfortably is a must for me. Even a slight difference in tightness will annoy me like hell

[–] [email protected] 19 points 1 year ago

Yeah you're a weirdo.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I can see your point, but tying both shoes would never ever have occurred to me as an option (unless I noticed the other shoe getting loose too). So I get your colleagues' surprise.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I use a Turquoise Turtle knot. My shoes don't come untied by accident.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

Ian's here, and same. It's so crazy that these knots which really aren't harder to learn, aren't the ones taught to kids.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago

you buy shoes without laces. last couple pairs of shoes I've had have had no laces and it's really nice

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago

Sorry, you're the weirdo.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago

Ehh... I'll give the other one a tug to make sure it isn't loose. But I'm not going to untie and retie it unless I have to.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You might try making one small change in the way you tie your shoe and you will find you rarely have them come undone.

Yes, there is a Ted Talk for tieing shoes.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Or you could go with an even more secure (and symmetrical) version

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Thanks, I'll try that out when I get home.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Nice, just tried it. I'll start tying my shoes this way.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I just double knot so the laces dont usually come undone so I'd just do the one shoe

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm a Chef and I used to do that as well. Up untill a managed to splash boiling water right into one of my shoes and because of the double knot couldn't get them off.... Had a nice bracelet of blisters for weeks after that

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Would a waterproof boot work better?

I’ve worked in similar jobs where you’re on your feet all day, so I understand focusing on comfort, though.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I don't think you got what I was trying to say. I was wearing water proof boots, but those don't do shit when you throw the water right into that waterproof boot. If anything, they just help to keep water in. My problem was not being able to get the damn thing off

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Ah, it was inside, my bad.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

If there's a big difference in how tight both shoes are I'll do the 2nd as well.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Pretty much any difference is too big of a difference for me

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

I would never retie a shoe that's tied, but also I can never get my shoes the same tightness anyway so I have no motivation to try. My feet are a little over half a US shoe size different.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Step 1: get Blundstones for work and never worry about laces again!

Otherwise, I only tie the affected shoe unless it's clear that the unaffected one is compromised.

Please tell me you didn't start with the untied lace. If I saw you notice one of your shoes were untied and you started by un/retying the other one first I would immediately and permanently be convinced you were, or are about to become, a serial killer.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Oh gawd no! Saw someone say they never thought about tying both shoes before in the comments here, but doing that would never have occurred to me. Yeah, you really must be a psychopath to do that.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Retie one, check the other and iff it's lose, retie it.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

If I’m in a hurry, I’ll just do the one, but if I have time I’ll do both.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Wh-what kind of question is this? I'm not a Replicant, I swear!

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Why retie the second and not just tighten?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

How does one do that? Without being more difficult than just doing it again

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

??? Just give the bows a tug? Takes one second

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I would definitely never own shoes with laces! Slip on shoes only for me!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

I kinda have to get good work boots if I wanna get through a day of running around in a kitchen. No laces for me in my free time either.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

I also like my shoes to be tied evenly tightly, but I can do it without having to retie both shoes.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Once upon a time I would have said re tie just one. But now I have elastic laces. You just pull em tight and they stay that way. No tying required

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Weirdo. You waste your time.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

If my shoes came untied, I'd be extremely confused since mine don't have laces.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

what if they became united?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Then my feet will have to ally with the hands when they go to war.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

It depends on what I’m doing. It’s a hassle if I were to tie them both if I was on the move but also useful if my current activity involves being stationary and I do tie them both.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Fun fact! IME, most people learned to tie their shoes incorrectly. Myself included.

If you know your knots, I learned to tie my shoes with a "Granny" knot. If you tie your shoes with a square knot, your shoe lace problems are vastly reduced.

There's lots of discussion on this around this as well as additional shoe tying improvements.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I just learned about this from another post a month or so ago and since I changed the way I tie my shoes, they have never gotten loose or untied. I can't believe I went my whole life tying my shoes wrong!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Normally just the one, if I'm skateboarding or snowboarding I'll do them both.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Depends what shoes I'm wearing and how tight the other one is. If it's walking boots - the time I care about tying properly - I've learnt to accept the already-tied one being a bit looser if it's at a comfortable tightness and not slipping, knowing the freshly-tied one will adjust to match as I walk. Used to be the asymmetry would drive me mad if I didn't re-tie both.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Like car tires? Replace 1 at a time.

Replace front/back pair at a time.

Replace all 4 same time.

I think just preference...not weird...

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

If one of your shoes came untied and the other one didn’t, then they weren’t equally tight last time you tied them.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I would definitely tie both shoes again!
